A little piece of my childhood died today

Whitney Houston died this morning. She was a sound that I associated with growing up and spending time in the kitchen with Rachel, our childminder.

“I will always love you” was a song of my childhood. It came out when I was six years old. I remember Rachel playing it in the on the radio in the kitchen. No matter what else could be said about her, Whitney certainly had a terrific pair of lungs.

They played it on the radio this morning, just before the news came at 8 and I hadn’t heard that she’d died by then. I just thought they were playing it as a Valentine’s song. It’s a particularly sad and poignant song. I was listening to it with a lump in my throat. By all accounts, Whitney’s life went off the rails a bit, which is sad. So perhaps this song is the best one to remember her by.
