The Lighthouse Cinema has reopened today. Rejoice! Rejoice! By far the coolest building in Dublin, this subterranean cinema looks more in place in Berlin, than Smithfield. Last year the north inner city lost out hugely, when the cinema was forced to shut down because the NAMA-land developer doubled its rent from 100,000 to 200,000 Euro. Despite the public and political outcry (and despair and disgust from anyone who had ever visited it) the cinema was allowed to close.
Today, however, the cinema has re-opened. I’ve just booked tickets to see The Artist this afternoon, so it will be interesting to see if the cinema retains it’s allure and charm, or if some of the magic has been lost now that it is under new management.
